Jabolčnik, cider, or tokc, is a traditional Upper Savinja drink that can be found in the cellar of every true local. Although it has lost its popularity throughout history, and many people know it only as a home drink to be drunk while working, it has become more and more important in recent years.
The name toukuc or tokc, is thought to have come from the fact that apples were sometimes not minced before being pressed, but were instead pounded in wooden containers with a special stick, the tolkec. As Tokc is completely natural and one of the oldest cultural beverages, the general description of it as a fermented juice made from pears and apples is in any case unsatisfactory.

Tokc is much more. If it is free of additives, it is a perfect organic drink, high in vitamin C and containing important minerals such as potassium and magnesium. The presence of yeasts in both tocco and apple juice, which have a beneficial effect on the gastro-intestinal tract, gives it a place among the most popular alcoholic drinks in the country.

It has a very interesting history. Cider was already known to the Germans and later the Romans, and is widespread throughout Europe, where apple groves can be found. For those of you who are not familiar with our Tokc, you will have heard of "cider", as the English call it, where cider has a long tradition.

Even the Romans, on their conquering expeditions, caught the British drinking what turned out to be fermented apple juice. The technology of production was brought to Rome and from there the art spread throughout the empire, and people quickly became enamoured of the delicious juice that not only refreshed, but also brought some joy and oblivion.

Apples, and most likely the "mysterious effects" of the tokc, also appear in Nordic mythology, where the goddess Iduna was the guardian of the golden apples that were the source of eternal youth. When the gods felt their loins being torn and they lost the will to eat, they ate the apple and immediately felt better. According to such legendary rumours, you should definitely try it when you visit our valley!

Because we wanted to revive this old drink and the way it is produced, which is also part of the cultural heritage of the Upper Savinja Valley, we decided to make a real tokc at the Menina campsite! Join us for apple picking and later, of course, for a tasting of sweet apple juice and tokc. It is still best paired with homemade zg. Savinjski želodec (dry meat). You will hardly find Tokc on sale, but if you visit a farm, they will be sure to offer it to refresh you on a hot summer's day. If you would like to take it home, you can get it from us at the campsite or from the Mozirje TIC, located at the Mozirje bus station.

In our shop you can of course also find apple juice, apple cider, apple cider vinegar and beautifully crafted jars or "jugs" for the Tokc, which will make it even sweeter
