At first glance, the Savinja Valley appears to be primarily a kingdom of nature – towering mountains, lush green valleys, and countless trails inviting exploration. But when the skies darken and the rain begins to fall, it doesn’t mean the outing is over. In fact, the rain offers an excellent opportunity for visitors to discover another, slightly more hidden yet equally magical side of the valley.

One can begin by immersing themselves in history. Castles that on sunny days offer sweeping views across the landscape take on an even more mysterious atmosphere in the rain. The Old Castle of Celje, with its creaking gates and towers once home to the stories of the Counts of Celje, gains a special character when wrapped in mist. In Nazarje, Vrbovec Castle awaits, where rain sliding down the stone walls only further emphasizes the strength of centuries past. Inside, the Forestry and Woodworking Museum illustrates how deeply the valley has always been connected to its forests and the craft of working with wood. Continuing toward Braslovče, Žovnek Castle rises above Lake Žovnek – the birthplace of the renowned Counts of Celje, now partly restored and offering shelter even in bad weather.

When the rain pours down, thermal waters provide a most welcoming refuge. In Dobrna, the healing power of water has intertwined with history for centuries, something felt at every step through the old spa park. Further along in Laško, the modern Thermana complex beneath its glass dome creates the sensation of stepping into a tropical world: while the rain taps against the outer windows, visitors relax carefree in the warm embrace of pools and saunas.

A short journey away in Velenje, a truly unique experience awaits – the Slovenian Coal Mining Museum. A descent underground, deep into the tunnels where miners worked for centuries, is unforgettable, completely shielded from the weather outside. Above the town stands Velenje Castle, one of the best-preserved castles in Slovenia, home to archaeological and ethnological collections as well as an art gallery. The town itself provides cultural refuge with its museums and galleries.

The Logar Valley also reveals a special beauty in the rain. While most visit it in sunshine, it becomes almost magical in wet weather. Mist drifting through forests and waterfalls surging with even greater power create a scene no sunny day can replicate. A walk to the Rinka Waterfall, with umbrella and proper clothing, followed by a stop at one of the mountain huts, becomes a memorable experience precisely because of its unique, almost mystical atmosphere.

For those seeking adventure, the team at Funpark Menina has a simple answer to rainy days: once you are in the water, you cannot get any wetter. Rain only enhances the experience of kayaking, sit-on-top, rafting, and other river activities, as the Savinja River rises with rainfall and the excitement on the water grows. All activities can be booked directly at the “raft garage” in the campsite or conveniently online. On rainy days, Funpark Menina even offers a special discount on all activities.

Rainy days in the Savinja Valley are therefore far from lost. They are an opportunity to discover castle legends, museum stories, healing thermal springs, and the valley’s mysterious beauty — which reveals itself in a completely different light when the rain begins to fall.
