The Gorenjska region is located in the northwestern part of Slovenia. It offers a stunning natural and cultural heritage. The Gorenjska region is extremely diverse, featuring alpine valleys (Planica, Tamar, Vrata), mountains, lakes, larger and smaller towns, as well as hidden villages, gorges, mountain ravines, and waterfalls (Peričnik, Savica, Martuljek waterfalls). A large part of the Gorenjska region is covered by the Julian Alps. Most of the Julian Alps belong to Triglav National Park, where the highest peak of Slovenia, Triglav, is located.

Gorenjska has many ski resorts, with the largest and most popular one located in Kranjska Gora, near the Italian and Austrian borders. At the foothills of the Alps, the most famous resorts can be found, with Bled being the most visited. Bled is best known for its castle, island, and the small church on it. Near Bled, the most interesting attractions to visit are the Pokljuka Gorge and the Vintgar Gorge.

KOKRA CANYON

Just a few meters from the hustle and bustle of Kranj lies the 30-meter-deep Kokra River Canyon, the second-deepest urban canyon in Europe. It offers a perfect retreat and relaxation in idyllic nature. Here, you can admire the crystal-clear Kokra River, its banks, gravel bars, floodplain forest, and rocky formations. During the summer months, the clear water and green surroundings attract swimmers, while a walk along the well-maintained wooden bridges and trails provides a particularly romantic experience.

The circular walking path descends 30 meters below the city of Kranj, offering a truly stunning view. A visit to Kokra Canyon is also suitable for families with young children, as the path runs along the river and remains gently sloped throughout.

You can also take a break in Kranj— the only city in Slovenia that offers a view of Triglav, Stol, and Grintovec, the peaks of Slovenia’s mountain ranges that form part of the Alps. This is why Kranj is often called the capital of the Slovenian Alps.

STRMOL CASTLE

Strmol Castle is located near Cerklje na Gorenjskem and was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 2004. To preserve its cultural heritage, the castle was fully restored between 2010 and 2012. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Slovenia.

Near the castle, you’ll find Kavarna Strmol, where you can enjoy excellent coffee, house-made cakes, and homemade ice cream while admiring the view of the castle. Next to the café, there is also a children's playground.

SVETI JOŠT NAD KRANJEM (SVETI JOŠT ABOVE KRANJ VILLAGE)

If you're looking for some real exercise, you can hike to the top (approximately 45–60 minutes) or cycle up, but Jošt is also accessible by car. Several hiking trails lead to the summit, each offering a unique experience. One of the trails passes by a hand-carved wooden log in the shape of a crocodile, which once served as a well. Today, a freshwater spring is located just behind it.

A great spot for a break is a small chapel a little further from the crocodile, where you’ll also find a small well with fresh drinking water.

At the summit stands the Church of Saint Jošt, a popular pilgrimage site. The church features holy stairs made from stones originating from the sacred steps in Rome.

Next to Dom na Joštu, there is a children’s playground, which will surely delight young hikers.

BLED

Bled is one of the most recognizable and picturesque destinations in Slovenia, famous for Lake Bled with its central island. On the island stands the Church of the Assumption, which visitors can reach by taking a ride on a traditional wooden boat—the pletna.

In addition to the unforgettable pletna ride, Bled offers breathtaking views from Bled Castle, relaxation by the lake, and the chance to taste the famous Bled cream cake (kremna rezina).

Surrounded by Alpine nature, Bled is a paradise for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and rowing.

JASNA LAKE

Before heading up the winding road to Vršič Pass, take a short break at Jasna Lake. It consists of two interconnected artificial lakes at the confluence of the Velika and Mala Pišnica streams.

Visitors and swimmers at Jasna Lake can enjoy wooden piers and a 6-meter-high viewing platform. You can also cool off with a refreshing drink or ice cream while admiring the breathtaking backdrop of the Julian Alps.

About 15 km from Jasna Lake, you’ll find the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana, a unique mountaineering and hiking center in Slovenia. Take a walk through the permanent exhibition, which showcases the history of Slovenian mountaineering—from the beginnings of organized hiking and the first alpine ascents to the modern achievements of Slovenian climbers worldwide. Along the way, you’ll learn about the first mountain guides, porters, trailblazers, and mountain rescuers.

If you continue driving for about 10 more minutes from the Slovenian Alpine Museum, you'll reach the parking area for Peričnik Waterfall. At 52 meters, it is one of the tallest waterfalls in Slovenia and the only one where you can walk behind the cascading water for a truly immersive experience.
